You may have heard of Boston Whaler, and their claim of being “the Unsinkable Legend” - well, they do make great boats, and furthermore, they put their money where their mouth is by cutting various examples of their boats in half for demonstration purposes. They even drive them around, sometimes, which is bold.

A quick Google image search shows you what I’m talking about (above).

Well, ladies and gentlemen, now is YOUR CHANCE to own one!! I mean, literally to own one of the demo boats, cut in half, to show how they use so much foam in the hull that it can’t be sunk.

Some assembly required.

Could use a quick wash too. Before or after you “glue it back together” that’s up to you. For just $500!

I literally learned about this marketing from Comedians in Cars.

Down here all the boats are inshore — bads fishing, skiing hot rods, or pontoon/hurricane boats. Very, very rarely do I seen a cabin cruiser or whaler style, but at the beach they’re everywhere.

I’d like to see that same demonstration when the boat isn’t on plane. Plus, I believe all boats under 20' have to be unsinkable - federal regulation . They have to have enough flotation to have neutral buoyancy when they are filled with water.

I’ve never been impressed with those ads.

I like how the ad says glue it back together.

You have to remember, this company made their name in the 60's back when “safety” wasn’t a thing yet. Sure, they’re unremarkable today but 50 years ago they were revolutionary. They are for sure part of the reason that any unsinkable boat regulations exist.

I’ll have to find out when that regulation was put in place. Off to the Googles!

Whalers being as good as they claim to be is only a recent development. The way they were filled pre ‘90s would trap moisture and cause hull rot. The company that made my boat (Wahoo!) was created by a former BW guy who knew he could do it better, and did.

They now use the method he did on Wahoo!s. The unsinkable legend would still be exactly that -a legend- if it want for Wahoo!.

Ha! Yeah, the old ones definitely used to get waterlogged over time. Unsinkable? Maybe, but also unable to get on plane.

The thing is, most boats under 20' aren’t actually unsinkable. I’ve seen lots of them on the bottom. At the very best, they’re neutrally buoyant, which is probably what the regulation is aimed at. Boats built like this really are very hard to get underwater because in one piece, you can fill the hull with water and it will just spill over the sides, or the stern . That’s not remotely true of most sterndrive (inboard/outboard) or inboard boats, even if they won’t exactly sink like a stone when filled with water.

ha! I remember that episode, and yeah, the 13' whaler is a boat everyone should experience. It’s like the VW beetle of boats. I’ve watched that one a few times actually. I think he should have had a wrangler towing the 13' whaler.

hahah, well then the Titanic would have only had 12 passengers and they would have all been uncomfortable. Whalers might be seaworthy, but comfortable? Err...
